Green Costa Rica
A World Leader in Environmental Protection
Costa Rica is renowned all over the world for it's biodiversity and amazing natural landscape. The country boasts some 12,000 species of plants, 1,239 species of butterflies, 838 species of birds, 440 species of reptiles and amphibians, and 232 species of mammals. Costa Rica also has over 10% of the country under national protection, and is increasing that number under the payments for environmental services plan which pays land owners for private preserves. Eco tourism helps offset this expense by capitalizing on its private and public protected lands. Costa Rica also has several programs for sustainable development including FUNDECOR (Forest Project of the Foundation for the Development of the Central Volcanic Mountain Range) and the National Council for Sustainable Development (CONADES). Over 80% of Costa Rica's power is produced using Hydro-Electric generation, and is looking to be carbon neutral by 2021.
